He paced in his cramped apartment, the worn floorboards groaning under his weight. The job at the gallery was everything he wanted. He imagined himself, surrounded by art, discussing masterpieces, advising patrons. Now, he felt as if his body was filled with static electricity, buzzing with a disquiet he couldn't name.

The phone rang, startling him. He jumped, heart hammering against his ribs. He snatched it up, expecting the call. It was his mother. He forced a smile into his voice, but the tremor in it betrayed him.

He hung up, returning to his restless circuit. He ran a hand through his already dishevelled hair. He found himself gnawing on his thumbnail. The interview was this afternoon. He hadn't heard from Sarah either. The shared applications had created a chasm between them.
